Biography

Richard L. Schmalbeck is the Simpson Thacher & Bartlett Professor Emeritus of Law at Duke University. He has had a distinguished academic career, during which he served as the dean of the University of Illinois College of Law and was a visiting professor at the law faculties of the University of Michigan and Northwestern University. His recent scholarly work has focused on issues involving non-profit organizations, as well as federal estate and gift taxes. Schmalbeck has also served as an adviser for tax reform efforts in the Russian Federation. He co-authored a federal income tax casebook with Lawrence Zelenak, which was released by Aspen Publishers in 2011. A graduate of the University of Chicago Law School, he was an associate editor of the University of Chicago Law Review. Prior to beginning his teaching career, he practiced tax law in Washington, D.C.
