Biography

Richard Schmalensee served as the John C. Head III Dean of the MIT Sloan School of Management from 1998 to 2007 and is a member of the President's Council of Economic Advisers (1989-1991). He has extensive experience in the fields of economics and public policy, particularly concerning antitrust, regulatory, energy, and environmental policies. He was the Director of the MIT Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research for 12 years and has acted as a consultant to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, the U.S. Department of Justice, and various private corporations. Professor Schmalensee is a Fellow of the Econometric Society and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and in 2012, he was recognized as a Distinguished Fellow by the Industrial Organization Society. In addition to his administrative roles, he has authored or co-authored 11 books and over 120 published articles, contributing significantly to the literature in industrial organization and economics, as well as serving on the Executive Committee of the American Economic Association and as a Director at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Currently, he is the Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Directors of Resources for the Future.
