Biography

Richard Schulz is a professor in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Alberta. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the University of Calgary in 1982 and his PhD in Pharmacology from the University of Alberta in 1989. His research focuses primarily on cardiovascular pharmacology and the understanding of oxidative stress in cardiovascular diseases. Specifically, he investigates the roles of various molecules in contributing to oxidative stress damage, particularly nitric oxide, superoxide, and peroxynitrite, in cardiac and vascular injury. His laboratory discovered that matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) targets and damages intracellular proteins, a shift from previous beliefs regarding its extracellular targets. The lab works on developing pharmacological treatments to protect the heart from oxidative stress injury. Richard has been involved in numerous research projects and has contributed extensively to the field through various publications addressing topics related to ischemic heart disease and myocardial reperfusion injury.
