Biography

Richard Shearmur is a Professor at McGill University's School of Urban Planning, where he has been since 2013. Originally from England, he grew up in France and returned to England for his undergraduate studies. He began his career as a real estate consultant in Europe during the late 1980s before moving to Canada in the mid-1990s to pursue a professional degree in planning. He earned a Master of Urban Planning from McGill University and a PhD in Economic Geography from Université de Montréal. His research focuses on understanding the locational dynamics of economic activities, with a particular interest in how innovation occurs within firms and how municipalities can adopt innovative practices. He examines these themes at various scales from neighborhoods to regional and national levels. Current projects address the challenges of urban and regional development, especially in smaller towns and rural areas of Canada, as well as the integration of innovative solutions in public sector contexts. Additionally, Richard teaches courses on real estate planning and statistical methodologies.
