Biography

Dr. Richard Summerbell is an Associate Professor at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto. He began his scientific career at the University of British Columbia in 1979, where he completed an MSc thesis on the ecology and genetics of the basidiomycetous yeast Leucosporidium scottii under the supervision of Prof. Robert J. Bandoni. He studied under Prof. David Malloch at the University of Toronto, completing a PhD thesis in 1985 focused on microfungal ecology of black spruce mycorrhizae. Summerbell has held various prestigious positions including chief mycologist at the Ministry of Health and research director at Sporometrics Inc. He is recognized as one of the foremost experts in fungi affecting human and environmental health, having authored 140 peer-reviewed scientific papers. His research interests include ecology, systematics of medically important fungi, and microbiology in various environments. He has also contributed to essential guidelines for air quality in public buildings and played an editorial role in several scientific journals. Summerbell's teaching responsibilities include the course CHL 5922 Climate Change and Health.
