Biography

Richard M. Tolman is the Sheldon D. Rose Collegiate Professor at the University of Michigan School of Social Work. Dr. Tolman received his doctorate in Social Welfare from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and his MSW and BS from the University of Michigan and Northwestern University respectively. His research primarily examines the effectiveness of interventions designed to change violent and abusive behaviors, focusing on the impact of such violence on the physical, psychological, and economic well-being of victims. Beginning his work in this area as a practitioner in the 1980s, he currently co-directs the Global Research Program on Mobilizing Men for Violence Prevention, a collaborative initiative with the University of Minnesota. His teaching typically centers around interpersonal practice, and he co-teaches a course on community empowerment through creative expression, merging research, teaching, and service efforts in innovative ways. Dr. Tolman has received numerous awards for his contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion in social work education.
