Biography

Richard van Hillegersberg attended medical school in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and received his PhD from the Department of Surgery at Erasmus MC Rotterdam in 1993. He trained in General Surgery in Rotterdam from 1994 to 2000 and was a fellow in Surgical Oncology at the Academic Medical Center Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, Netherlands Cancer Center, Amsterdam, from 2001 to 2002. In 2003, he was appointed as a staff surgeon at the University Medical Center Utrecht and became a full professor of gastrointestinal oncology in 2009. His research focuses on upper gastrointestinal minimally invasive robotic surgery, surgical imaging, and genetic profiling. He has authored 15 textbook chapters and over 500 articles in international peer-reviewed journals. He has served as chairman of the Educational Committee of the European Society of Diseases of the Esophagus (ESDE) since 2018 and is a member of the education committee of the International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus (ISDE).
