Richard van Hillegersberg attended medical school in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and received his PhD from the Department of Surgery at Erasmus MC Rotterdam in 1993. He trained in General Surgery in Rotterdam from 1994 to 2000 and was a fellow in Surgical Oncology at the Academic Medical Center Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, Netherlands Cancer Center, Amsterdam, from 2001 to 2002. He has served as chairman of the Educational Committee of the European Society of Diseases of the Esophagus (ESDE) since 2018 and is a member of the education committee of the International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus (ISDE).
