Biography

Richard Vedan, a member of the Secwepemc Nation, served as Associate Professor Emeritus and Nations Advisor at the University of British Columbia's School of Social Work since joining in 1995. He completed an appointment as Director of Nation House Learning and Senior Advisor to the President on Aboriginal Affairs from 2001 to 2008. With over 40 years of experience as a social worker and educator, Vedan's clinical practice has involved couples and families, focusing on drug and alcohol treatment, policy development, and program development. His leadership roles have included significant contributions to various boards and organizations that advocate for Indigenous rights and social work education. He has been a Co-Principal Investigator on multiple community-based research projects emphasizing Indigenous knowledge and traditional healing practices. He retired on January 1, 2014, after a impactful career in social work education and community engagement.
