Biography

Richard Vinograd is the Christensen Fund Professor of Asian Art at Stanford University, where he has been teaching since 1989. His research focuses on Chinese portraiture, landscape painting, cultural geography, urban cultural spaces, the aesthetics of painting, theory, art historiography, and inter-media studies. Vinograd has published extensively in the field, including his book 'Boundaries Self: Chinese Portraits, 1600-1900', and has co-edited works like 'New Understandings Ming Qing Painting'. He has authored more than thirty journal articles, chapters, and essays addressing topics from tenth-century landscape painting to contemporary transnational arts. Vinograd has held significant administrative roles, including Chair of the Department of Art & Art History at Stanford and various leadership positions at the University of Southern California. His accolades include fellowships at the Stanford Humanities Center and the Millard Meiss Publication Fund Subsidy from the College Art Association. He holds a B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles, an M.A., and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.
