Richard studied at Oxford University, earning a BA in 1987 and an MA D.Phil in 1991. From 1990 to 1993, he was a Junior Research Fellow at Christ Church, Oxford, where he worked with the Clarendon Laboratory. Subsequently, he worked at Ludwig-Maximilians-University (LMU) in Munich, Germany, from 1993 to 1999, initially as a von Humboldt Fellow and then as a Marie Curie Fellow, eventually becoming an Assistant Professor after being awarded a Habilitation from LMU in 2000. In 2000, he moved to Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, starting as a Lecturer and being promoted to Reader in 2001, and then to Professor in 2005. Between 2001 and 2006, he held the position of EPSRC Advanced Fellow. In 2009, Richard joined the University of Basel's Physics Department as a full Professor. His research primarily focuses on semiconductor physics, particularly the optics of semiconductor heterostructures and nanostructures. He leads the Nano-Photonics Group, which is currently engaged in projects involving quantum technology, including single photon sources and spin-photon interfaces, as well as micro-cavities and solid-state emitters.
