Biography

Richard Watts is an Associate Professor in French and Italian Studies at the University of Washington, specializing in postcolonial studies and ecocriticism. His work focuses on the interactions between cultural production and the post/colonial francophone world. He is the author of 'Packaging Post/Coloniality: Manufacture Literary Identity in the Francophone World' (Lexington Books, 2005), which examines how the presentation of literary works—including covers, illustrations, and prefaces—serves as instruments of cultural translation, allowing these works to navigate the complexities of postcolonial space. His current research project, tentatively titled 'Water Narratives: Imagining Global Environmental Change in the Francophone Post/Colonial World', explores themes of pollution, privatization, and manufactured scarcity of water and their impact on literature and cinema. He has published articles in several prominent journals, such as Modern Language Notes and Research in African Literatures, and has served as a research fellow at the University of Washington's Simpson Center for the Humanities, as well as a resident at the Rockefeller Foundation's Bellagio Center.
