Dr. Richard Whittington

Biography

Richard is a leader in the field of Strategy-as-Practice research and has published extensively in this area since 1996. He has played a pivotal role in revitalizing research on strategy processes and has been formally recognized as a leading figure in Strategy-as-Practice, contributing to major conferences such as the Strategic Management Society and the Academy of Management. Richard has authored eleven influential textbooks in strategy, including 'Exploring Strategy,' which has achieved a top ranking in the Financial Teaching Power index for strategy textbooks worldwide. His research work is widely cited, with over 50,000 citations across leading academic journals, including Administrative Science Quarterly and the Strategic Management Journal. Additionally, Richard has served as Associate Editor of the Strategic Management Journal and has held various editorial roles in prominent academic journals. He has taught strategy and strategic management at various levels, focusing on the implications of strategic choices for firms and encouraging a participatory approach in his teaching. Richard is a Millman Fellow of Management at New College, University of Oxford, and has held visiting appointments at several top business schools globally. He holds a PhD from Manchester Business School and has been awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland.
