Biography

Richard Wright is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Linguistics at the University of Washington. He earned his PhD in Linguistics from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1996, after completing a BA in French and African Studies at Michigan State University in 1986. His primary research focus lies in understanding the sources of systematic variation in the production and perception of language, relating language universals to language structure. He has a keen interest in the prosody of speech and discourse, as well as describing the phonetics of endangered and under-described languages. Wright's research also incorporates translational elements, particularly in the realms of spoken language technology and clinical applications concerning hearing loss and perception conditions. In his teaching, he emphasizes incorporating diverse readings and resources from BIPOC scholars to reflect the variety and richness of the subfields and to amplify the voices of underrepresented scholars. He draws on examples from stigmatized dialects and sociolects to raise student awareness about the vast diversity inherent in human language.
