Richie Goulding is an Assistant Professor in Exercise Muscle Physiology at the Department of Human Movement Sciences, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He obtained his PhD from Liverpool Hope University in 2019, focusing on the physiological determinants of sustainable oxidative metabolism in relation to type 1 diabetes. After his doctoral studies, he undertook a postdoctoral fellowship with the Japan Society for Promotion of Science in Kobe, Japan, where he studied local oxygen delivery and utilization during exercise using advanced spectroscopic methods. Since returning to the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, he has been involved in research concerning the relationships between skeletal muscle mitochondrial health, exercise, and chronic diseases, including multiple sclerosis and long COVID. His teaching responsibilities include coordinating courses on Training, Ageing, and Disuse, and he actively supervises BSc and MSc students. His research interests center on understanding the bioenergetic limitations of human performance, focusing on oxygen transport and utilization in skeletal muscle, and the adaptations that occur with exercise training and aging. Goulding's work is supported by numerous grants from major funding bodies, including NWO and ZonMw.
