Biography

Richmond Sarpong is a Professor and Executive Associate Dean at the University of California, Berkeley, in the College of Chemistry. He received his B.A. in Chemistry from Macalester College in 1995 and completed his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry at Princeton University in 2001. Following his doctoral studies, he served as a UNCF-Pfizer Postdoctoral Fellow at the California Institute of Technology from 2000 to 2004. His research focuses on Organic Organometallic Chemistry, particularly the total synthesis of biologically active architecturally complex natural products and the development of new synthetic methods and strategies. Professor Sarpong's group is interested in defining new directions in carbon-carbon bond formation and validating methodologies within the synthesis of complex molecules. Current research interests include natural products such as the teleocidin B family of indole alkaloids, cyathane diterpenoids, and trichothecane sesquiterpenoids, which have potent biological activities.
