Biography

Rick Halpern is an Emeritus Professor and social historian whose work focuses on race and labor within national and international contexts. He has extensively written about the meatpacking industry, sugar plantations, and regionalism. Halpern's current major projects include a book on race and class as depicted in 20th-century photography and a study of the events surrounding Chicago in 1919. He has also served as the Bissell-Heyd Chair in American Studies and the Dean of UTSC in July 2015, and was previously the Principal of New College at the St. George campus.
