Biography

Rick Maizels is a Professor of Parasitology at the University of Glasgow's School of Infection & Immunity. His research focuses on fundamental questions regarding how parasites manipulate the mammalian immune system, which has evolved to combat these immunomodulatory strategies. He relocated to the University of Glasgow in 2016 after holding a Chair in Zoology at the University of Edinburgh from 1995 to 2015, and previously being a Professor of Parasite Immunology at Imperial College London. Before his tenure at Imperial, he worked at the National Institute for Medical Research in London, UCLA, and the California Institute of Technology. In 2002, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and became a Senior Fellow of the American Asthma Foundation in 2010. His laboratory investigates complex parasites, especially multicellular helminths, which trigger significant tropical diseases and exhibit profound immuno-regulatory capabilities. His work aims to understand the mechanisms by which parasites manipulate host immune responses and explore the potential for these mechanisms to inform therapeutic strategies for immunological diseases.
