Biography

Rick Strand is an Associate Professor in the School of Architecture at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he began as a full-time faculty member in 1999 after part-time teaching in 1999. He received his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1989, followed by a Master of Science in 1992 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1995, both from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research focuses on the development of EnergyPlus, a building energy simulation program sponsored by the Department of Energy, where he has been a continuous member of the EnergyPlus Development Team since its inception in 1995. Dr. Strand's expertise includes low temperature radiant systems, thermal energy storage, and building energy modeling. He has taught various courses on environmental control systems and building energy simulation, contributing significantly to the education of students in architectural engineering. He has advised several doctoral students and is recognized as an international expert in heat balance-based calculation engines used to model radiant systems within EnergyPlus.
