Dr. Rico Möckel

Biography

Rico Möckel is an Associate Professor in Robotics and Intelligent Systems at Maastricht University, where he serves as the Director of Robotics Laboratories. He obtained his PhD from ETH Zurich in 2012 and has since completed postdoctoral research at EPFL and Darmstadt University of Technology. His research primarily focuses on robotics and artificial intelligence with significant societal relevance, targeting innovations in several areas including increasing the autonomy of robotic systems, enhancing the collaborative abilities between robots and humans, and exploring distributed artificial intelligence and swarm intelligence. Möckel is actively involved in projects such as the ITEA ADVISOR, which aims to enable Cooperative Missions for Autonomous Vehicle Swarms in Surveillance Tasks, and he is the main principal investigator of the EDMO initiative, which develops robotic AI solutions to support children and educators. He coordinates the H2020 IA CoRoSect project, which generates sustainable robotic solutions for automated insect farms. His contributions received several awards, including recognition in data science and competitions in functional imaging and robotics. He has also held significant roles in various academic programs and contributed to the direction of research within his department.
