Biography

Rishi Sawhney, M.D., is an Assistant Professor and Associate Chair of Community Psychiatry at Dell Medical School. He received his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine, graduating with the distinction of 'Care for the Underserved.' He completed his adult psychiatry residency at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York and a public psychiatry fellowship at Columbia University Medical Center. Dr. Sawhney holds an undergraduate degree in finance from the University of Texas at Austin. He is a psychiatrist associated with CommUnityCare Health Centers, serving at the Black Men’s Health Clinic and the David Powell Clinic, focusing on healthcare for individuals experiencing homelessness. Before joining Dell Medical School, he served as the community behavioral health medical director for the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, providing medical leadership for a $900 million annually state-funded community-based psychiatric service program. He has also served as an assistant professor at the Texas Department of State Health Services in the Preventive Medicine Residency and held positions on the Texas State Hospital governing body and the Institutional Review Board of the Texas Health and Human Services. His research interests include administrative psychiatry, community psychiatry, safety-net services, collaborative care, and psychiatric leadership focused on recovery-centered services.
