Justice Rita-Jean Maxwell is an alumnus of the Faculty of Law at the University of Toronto and was appointed as a judge of the Superior Court of Justice in Ontario. After receiving her Bachelor of Arts from Harvard University, she obtained her Juris Doctor from the University of Toronto and later an LLM from Georgetown Law School. Madam Justice Maxwell was called to the Ontario Bar in 2002. She began her career in civil litigation at McCarthy Tétrault LLP before becoming an assistant Crown attorney, where she handled criminal prosecutions in Toronto. With a strong belief in the justice system’s capacity to deliver justice fairly and equitably, she conducted graduate work with the Mid-Atlantic Innocence Project focused on wrongful convictions while serving as a Visiting Professional at the International Criminal Court in The Hague. Appointed to the Ontario Court of Justice in 2017, she had previously served as Legal Counsel at the Court of Appeal for Ontario from 2015 to 2017. Justice Maxwell is dedicated to legal education, teaching at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law, Osgoode Hall Law School, and Ryerson Law School, as well as engaging in numerous continuing legal education programs. Her commitment to increasing diversity and inclusion in the legal profession is evident through her initiatives in various programs, including the LAWS Program and the Canadian Association of Black Lawyers.
