Dr. Rob Beswick

Biography

Rob Beswick is a Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Manchester and serves as the Joint-Director of the UK SKA Regional Centre, as well as the Head of Science Operations User Support for the e-MERLIN/VLBI National Facility. His primary research interests focus on extragalactic radio astronomy, particularly in understanding star-formation, accretion processes, and cosmic time. He employs spectral line observations to investigate transient astronomical events using advanced radio interferometric techniques. Beswick is the Principal Investigator on the e-MERLIN Legacy project, which aims to create high-resolution images of nearby galaxies, leveraging e-MERLIN's substantial observing time. Under his leadership, the Centre for Excellence in Radio Astronomy at the University of Manchester integrates a diverse team of research and operational staff, actively contributing to significant international projects involving cutting-edge astronomical research infrastructures such as ALMA and LOFAR. His work has wide implications for the scientific community and contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on leveraging big data in radio astronomy for advancements in STEM education and public engagement.
