Rob Harrap is a faculty member in the Department of Geological Sciences and Geological Engineering. He focuses on the intersection of new media, computation, and geosciences. With over 25 years of experience, he actively promotes geodesign, integrating human-centered design with natural sciences and artificial intelligence to build intelligent decision support tools. His research background includes geological engineering, structural geology, and Archean tectonics. Since the early 1990s, he has worked on rethinking fieldwork through the use of computational visualization tools, 3D modeling, augmented reality, and mobile applications. He also works to augment world models using software tools for field data capture, encompassing geology, urban design, architecture, cognitive science, and game design. Rob is actively involved in the GIScience community in Canada, with multiple grants and partnerships, including support from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council for his work on educational games centered on climate change experiences in late-Medieval England. In terms of teaching, he instructs graduate-level courses in terrain analysis, GIS data management, and 3D visualization.
Department of Computing offers research-based, project-based, and course-based patterns.
