Dr. Rob Shields

Biography

Rob Shields is a Professor in the Faculty of Science at the University of Alberta, specializing in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. His interdisciplinary work involves architecture, urban geography, and planning, significantly contributing to academic discourse on social theory and cultural geography. He is an award-winning author and has co-edited numerous influential books, including 'Spatial Questions' and 'Virtual Lifestyle Shopping.' His academic career includes serving as the Director of the Institute of Interdisciplinary Studies at Carleton University and being a Commonwealth Scholar at the University of Sussex. Currently, he holds the Henry Marshall Tory Endowed Research Chair at the University of Alberta. His research interests focus on socio-spatial dynamics, geopolitics, climate change implications, and the integration of nanotechnology in space studies. He also engages in teaching topics related to urban spatial histories and science communications. In addition, Shields founded 'Space and Culture,' an international peer-refereed journal, contributing to dialogues on culture and spatiality. His ongoing research includes exploring innovative community dynamics and social aspects of architecture. The Space Culture Research Group that he leads meets throughout the academic year, fostering discussions on urban culture and spatial practices.
