Biography

Robert Aiken is an Emeritus Professor in the Department of Geography at Concordia University, specializing in historical cultural geography with a focus on climate, disease, and medical thought. Born in Northern Ireland, he completed his undergraduate education in Geography at Queen's University of Belfast before moving to Canada for graduate studies at McMaster University. He later received his Ph.D. from Penn State University and conducted postdoctoral studies at Berkeley, California. Aiken has taught at the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur and joined Concordia University in 1975. His research interests encompass tropical deforestation, environmental issues in developing countries, hill stations in the Orient, and tropical botanic gardens from the British Empire in Malaysia. After a distinguished career, he retired in June 2007.
