Biography

Robert Alpern, MD, is the Ensign Professor of Medicine at Yale School of Medicine and has a robust career in nephrology. He received his MD from the University of Chicago in 1976 after completing his undergraduate studies at Northwestern University, where he majored in Chemistry. Following his education, he undertook residency training in Internal Medicine at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York and a postdoctoral fellowship in Nephrology at the University of California, San Francisco. Before joining Yale, he held prestigious positions at the University of California, San Francisco, and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, where he was the Chief of the Division of Nephrology. Alpern's research primarily involves the regulation of kidney transport proteins, influencing renal physiology significantly. He has served in various notable roles, including as President of the American Society of Nephrology and as a member of several respected medical organizations such as the National Academy of Medicine.
