Biography

Robert Alpern received his MD from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine in 1976 after majoring in Chemistry at Northwestern University, where he earned his BA in 1972. Following his medical education, he completed residency training in Internal Medicine at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York. Dr. Alpern then performed a postdoctoral fellowship in Nephrology at the Cardiovascular Research Institute of the University of California, San Francisco, in 1982. He joined the faculty at UCSF before being recruited to the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in 1987 as Chief of the Division of Nephrology. In 1998, Dr. Alpern was appointed Dean of the Southwestern Medical School and later moved to Yale School of Medicine in 2004, where he became the Ensign Professor of Medicine and the Dean of the medical school. His research centers on the regulation of kidney transport proteins, and he is also deeply committed to teaching and clinical practice. In recognition of his contributions, he was elected President of the American Society of Nephrology in 2000 and is a member of several prestigious organizations including the National Academy of Medicine.
