Dr. Robert Appleby

Biography

Robert Appleby is a Reader in the Accelerator Physics Group at the University of Manchester. His primary research focuses on accelerator physics, specifically in particle accelerators and beam dynamics, A significant part of his work is associated with the International Linear Collider and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). He is a member of the LHCb collaboration, where he is responsible for managing machine-induced backgrounds in the experiments. Robert holds a Master of Physics (MPhys) in theoretical physics from the University of York, completed in 2000, followed by a PhD in theoretical particle physics in 2003. He has also served as a staff accelerator physicist at the Accelerator Science and Technology Centre and as a visiting postdoctoral scientist in France. In addition to his research endeavors, he has been involved in several projects related to proton therapy, contributing to establishing the UK’s high-energy proton therapy service. Robert has extensive experience in academic settings, having worked as a lecturer in accelerator physics since 2005 and holding a senior scientist position at the Cockcroft Institute. His work impacts several scientific fields, contributing to advancements in high-energy physics and the development of new technologies.
