Robert J. Asaro is a Professor of Structural Engineering at the Jacobs School of Engineering, University of California, San Diego, where he has been a faculty member since 1989. Asaro's work focuses on the design and manufacturing of large-scale composite structures, particularly for marine applications. His research includes the use of molded hollow tubes made from advanced composite materials, such as glass fiber and vinyl ester resin, with recycled plastic sheaths to create stronger and safer piers. He is also interested in deformation, fracture, and fatigue in materials, with a focus on high-temperature intermetallics and the bulk processing of high-temperature superconductors. Before joining UCSD, Asaro was an associate professor at Brown University and worked as a research scientist at the Ford Motor Company and the U.S. Naval Radiological Laboratory. He is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Society for Metals and the Materials Research Society, and has received numerous awards for his contributions to the field, including the NSF Creativity Award and the C.H. Matthewson Gold Medal from the Minerals, Metals & Materials Society.
