Biography

Robert Ashmore is an Associate Professor and Department Chair in the Chinese Program at the University of California, Berkeley. He received his Master of Arts in classical Chinese literature from Beijing University in 1992 and continued his graduate studies in the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University, where he earned his Ph.D. in November 1997. His research focuses on Chinese literature from the eleventh century, with special interests in lyric poetry, poetic theory, and song musical performance, as well as traditional concepts of identity and personality. Currently, he is completing work on a book manuscript that explores literary culture in the early ninth century.
