Biography

Robert J. Birgeneau is a distinguished physicist primarily focused on phases and phase transition behavior of novel states of matter. His research encompasses one- and two-dimensional magnets, liquid crystals, physisorbed and chemisorbed surface monolayers, clean metal-semiconductor surfaces, graphite intercalates, and highly disordered magnets as well as lamellar CuO2 superconductors. He employs neutron and X-ray scattering techniques to probe these complex systems. His pioneering work, along with collaborators in high resolution studies of condensed matter, has significantly contributed to the understanding of high temperature superconducting materials. A graduate of the University of Toronto with a B.Sc. in Mathematics, he earned his Ph.D. in Physics from Yale. Birgeneau has held prestigious positions, including serving as the 14th president of the University of Toronto and as chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley, where he advocated for diversity and equity in academia. His honors include the O. E. Buckley Prize and the Julius Edgar Lilienfeld Prize from the American Physical Society, among others, recognizing his substantial contributions to physics and effective communication of complex scientific concepts.
