Canada Excellence Research Chair Laureate in Quantum Nonlinear Optics and Professor of Physics, Robert Boyd was born in Buffalo, New York. He received a bachelor’s degree in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and holds a PhD in physics from the University of California at Berkeley. His PhD thesis, supervised by Charles Townes, involved the use of nonlinear optical techniques for infrared detection in astronomy. In 1977, Professor Boyd joined the faculty at the University of Rochester. By 2001, he became the M. Parker Givens Professor of Optics and Professor of Physics. In 2010, he was appointed the Canada Excellence Research Chair in Quantum Nonlinear Optics at the University of Ottawa. His research interests include studies of slow and fast light propagation, quantum imaging techniques, nonlinear optical interactions, and the development of photonic devices and biosensors. Professor Boyd has authored books, co-edited anthologies, and published over 300 research papers. He has been awarded eight patents and was the 2009 recipient of the Willis E. Lamb Award in Laser Science and Quantum Optics. He is a fellow of the American Physical Society and the Optical Society of America. He has served as an APS representative and chair of the Joint Council on Quantum Electronics, and currently sits on the Board of Editors for Physical Review Letters and the Board of Reviewing Editors for Science Magazine.
