Biography

Robert Chesney is the Dean of Texas Law and holds the James Baker III Chair in Rule of Law and World Affairs. Prior to his deanship, he served as the associate dean for academic affairs for twelve years. He founded and guides the Integrated Cybersecurity Studies program at UT’s Strauss Center for International Security and Law. Dean Chesney's academic interests and scholarship focus on U.S. national security and cybersecurity, encompassing topics such as cybersecurity law and policy, constitutional law, evidence, counterterrorism law, and the law relating to the intelligence community. He has contributed significantly to understanding international security issues through various roles, including co-chairing university-wide strategic planning processes. Chesney has been recognized for his teaching excellence and has previously practiced law in litigation at Davis Polk & Wardwell in New York City. He holds a JD from Harvard Law School and a BS from Texas Christian University, graduating magna cum laude. In addition to his academic work, he co-founded and contributes to Lawfare, a leading source of analysis and commentary on national security law.
