Biography

Robert D. Crews is a historian specializing in Afghanistan, Central South Asia, Russia, Islam, and Global History. He received his MA in History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed his PhD at Columbia University. He has authored several works, including 'Afghan Modern: History Global Nation' published by Belknap Press of Harvard University Press in 2015, and 'Prophet Tsar: Islam Empire Russia Central Asia.' He also co-edited 'Drones: Modern Lives Afghanistan-Pakistan Borderlands.' Robert has served as Director of the Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies and of the Abbasi Program in Islamic Studies at Stanford University. Currently, he is the Editor-in-Chief of a journal on Afghanistan and has received several awards for his teaching, including the Dean’s Award for Distinguished Teaching at Stanford. His research has been supported by various grants including the Fulbright-Hays Program and the Carnegie Corporation. He teaches courses related to global drug wars and politics in Islamic republics, highlighting his commitment to educating on contemporary issues in Islamic and Middle Eastern societies.
