Robert Cribb grew up in Brisbane, Australia, spending his childhood wandering the bush as the child of botanist parents. After completing his undergraduate studies in Asian History at the University of Queensland, he obtained a PhD from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, with a thesis on the Jakarta Indonesian Revolution, 1945-1949. Following his graduation, he taught at Griffith University and the University of Queensland, both in Brisbane, and served as a guest lecturer at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands. He has held research positions at the Australian National University, the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study, and the Nordic Institute of Asian Studies, where he was the director for several years. In 2003, he rejoined the Australian National University. His qualifications include a BA with Honors from Queensland and a PhD from SOAS. Cribb's research interests primarily focus on Indonesia, with a keen interest in parts of Southeast Asia, especially Malaysia and Burma/Myanmar, as well as Inner Asia. His research themes include mass violence and crime, national identity, environmental politics, and historical geography. Current projects include investigations into the origins of massacres in Indonesia and wartime crimes committed by the Japanese military between 1941 and 1945.
