Biography

Robert Cudmore is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physiology and Membrane Biology at the University of California, Davis. His research focuses on understanding neuronal vascular function, particularly the interactions of individual cells and systems that cooperate to orchestrate network-level behavior. He employs a combination of techniques including mouse genetics, behavior studies, electrophysiology, and in vivo two-photon imaging to investigate these complex interactions. A significant part of his research involves developing data analysis pipelines that can manage increasingly larger datasets, which are becoming commonplace in the field. His work addresses the structure and function of the cerebral vasculature and the neuro-vascular unit (NVU), comprised of various cell types including endothelial cells, pericytes, and smooth muscle cells. The NVU plays a critical role in maintaining brain health by regulating blood flow and waste removal. Disruptions in NVU function are associated with diseases such as stroke, hypertension, diabetes, and Alzheimer's disease, highlighting its importance in cognitive health, especially in the aging population.
