Biography

Robert Dalrymple is the Willard Lillian Hackerman Professor Emeritus in the Department of Civil and Systems Engineering at Johns Hopkins University, having earned emeritus status in 2016. His research prominently focuses on coastal engineering, with particular attention to the impact of water waves on shorelines and structures, as well as water-related natural hazards like rip currents and tsunamis. Recently, Dalrymple's work has included the numerical method of smoothed particle hydrodynamics for studying free surface flows, utilizing advanced computational resources such as graphics cards. He is a Distinguished Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) since 2013 and has been recognized as an Académico Correspondiente by the Royal Academy of Engineering in Spain. Dalrymple has served as a member of the Coastal Engineering Research Board for the Corps of Engineers, and chaired ASCE’s Coastal Engineering Research Council and the National Research Council’s Marine Board. In 2006, he was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and was named a Fellow of the Coasts, Oceans, Ports & Rivers Institute (COPRI) in 2010. He is the founder of a global listserve for coastal engineers and has contributed to numerous National Research Council committees focused on coastal issues. In 2013, he held the H. Burr Steinbach Visiting Scholar position at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Dalrymple holds an undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College, a master’s degree from the University of Hawaii, and a PhD from the University of Florida.
