Biography

Dr. Robert J. Durán is an Associate Professor at Texas A&M University in the College of Arts and Sciences, specializing in sociology. He earned his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Colorado in 2006 and has held tenured positions at New Mexico State University from 2006 to 2014 and at the University of Tennessee from 2014 to 2018. Dr. Durán's research focuses on areas such as gang involvement, police shootings, disproportionate minority contact with juveniles, and neighborhood segregation affecting racial and ethnic inequalities. As a criminologist and urban ethnographer, his work examines social control institutions in various communities, particularly in Mexican American barrios, White suburbs, and Black neighborhoods across the Southwest and Southeast. He is committed to empowering marginalized communities by employing research to influence institutional policies and practices. His courses at Texas A&M include Criminology, Racial Ethnic Relations, and Qualitative Methodology. He has received several awards for his contributions to scholarship related to race, ethnicity, crime, and justice, including honors from the American Society of Criminology.
