Biography

Robert Finger's research lies at the intersection of agricultural science and economics. His work aims to improve resilience and sustainability in agricultural food systems, focusing on farm-level decisions and their connections to the environment, markets, society, and policy, particularly in the context of European agriculture. His interdisciplinary research covers topics related to agricultural practices and systems, particularly evaluating and designing agricultural policies and the economics of pest risk management. Born in 1981, he studied economics at European University Frankfurt Oder in Germany. In 2006, he joined ETH Zurich as a doctoral student, contributing to an interdisciplinary research project on the impacts of climate change adaptation on Swiss agriculture, which culminated in a doctorate in 2009. He has held a postdoctoral position at ETH Zurich and an assistant professorship in agricultural economics and rural policy at Wageningen University in the Netherlands. From 2014 to 2016, he was a Professor of Production Economics at the University of Bonn in Germany before becoming a professor of agricultural economics and policy at ETH Zurich. Finger actively contributes to the agricultural sciences program at ETH Zurich, having taught six courses at both the bachelor's and master's levels, and is involved in doctoral education and continuing education programs. He chairs the World Food Systems Center at ETH Zurich and leads efforts to promote multidisciplinary approaches to sustainable food security research.
