Biography

Robert Freund is the Theresa Seley Professor in Management Science at MIT Sloan School of Management. His main research interests include convex optimization, computational complexity related to computational science, and large-scale nonlinear optimization. His recent work addresses first-order methods in the context of statistical machine learning. He has served as co-editor for the journal Mathematical Programming and as an associate editor for various optimization and operations research journals. As Co-Director of the MIT Operations Research Center, he plays a critical role in research initiatives in optimization and design. Professor Freund has held several leadership positions including Deputy Dean from 2008 to 2011. He has also received multiple awards for his contributions to teaching and education, notably the Longuet-Higgins Prize in computer vision in 2007, and the Samuel M. Seegal Faculty Prize awarded by MIT in 2020. Freund holds a BA in mathematics from Princeton University and both an MS and PhD in operations research from Stanford University. He was elected as a Fellow of INFORMS in 2018, recognizing his lifetime achievements in the field.
