Biography

Robert H. Gertner has been a faculty member at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business since 1986. He serves as the Frank P. Marianne R. Diassi Distinguished Service Professor and the John Edwardson Faculty Director of the Rustandy Center for Social Sector Innovation. His research focuses on strategic decision-making, corporate finance, organizational structure, the theory of the firm, and social enterprises. Gertner has published extensively in top scholarly journals, including the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the Review of Economic Studies, and the Yale Law Journal, and has collaborated with notable colleagues such as Douglas Baird and Randy Picker on applications of game theory to law. He teaches courses on Perspectives on Capitalism and New Social Ventures, exploring the dynamics of social entrepreneurship and its challenges. Additionally, Gertner has served as the deputy dean of Chicago Booth from 2012 to 2017 and is currently the chair of the Board of Trustees for NORC at the University of Chicago, a national organization dedicated to large-scale social research for the public good. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics summa cum laude from Princeton University (1981) and a PhD in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1986). Before his doctoral studies, he worked as a consultant at AT&T.
