Biography

Robert Hall is an applied economist known for his work in economics, technology, competition, and economic policy, particularly in relation to the aggregate economy and specific markets. He served as President of the American Economic Association in 2010 and has presented the Ely Lecture on multiple occasions. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and has held various distinguished fellowships, including with the American Economic Association and the Econometric Society. He co-authored the influential economics textbook, Economics: Principles and Applications. Hall directed the research program on economic fluctuations and growth at the National Bureau of Economic Research from 1977 to 2013 and continues to serve as chairman of the Bureau's Committee on Business Cycle Dating. His work has informed national economic policy, advising various government agencies and testifying before congressional committees. His academic career includes teaching appointments at Stanford University and institutions like MIT and the University of California, Berkeley. Hall holds a Ph.D. from MIT and a B.A. from UC Berkeley.
