Biography

Robert Hariman joined the Northwestern University faculty in 2004 as the Owen L. Coon Professor in the School of Communication. His scholarship focuses on the role of public art and artistry in human affairs, particularly regarding political judgment and the discursive constitution of modern society. Hariman teaches courses in rhetorical theory and the critical study of public culture. His current work includes a continuing involvement in the history of rhetoric, alongside a long-term project that attempts to reboot formalism while engaging with existential problems posed by the Anthropocene. He has authored numerous book chapters and journal articles across disciplines, and his work has been translated into Arabic, Chinese, and French. His selected publications include titles such as "The Public Image: Photography Civic Spectatorship", co-authored with John Louis Lucaites, and "Culture, Catastrophe, Rhetoric: Texture Political Action", co-edited with Ralph Cintron.
