Biography

Robert O. Heuckeroth, M.D., Ph.D. is a Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania, specializing in Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition. He completed his undergraduate studies in Chemistry at the University of Maryland, graduating with Summa Cum Laude honors. Heuckeroth earned his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and subsequently obtained his M.D. He leads research focused on the molecular and cellular mechanisms that control enteric nervous system development. His work employs a combination of molecular biology, genetics, live cell imaging, primary cell culture, epidemiology, physiology, biochemistry, and stem cell biology to explore complex processes governing both normal and abnormal development. His long-term objective is to find new strategies to prevent birth defects and repair damaged organs. Current research projects include defining the genetics of Hirschsprung disease and intestinal pseudoobstruction syndrome, identifying gene-environment interactions that lead to human birth defects, determining the mechanisms that control the fate of enteric nervous system stem cells, and developing regenerative medicine approaches for children with serious intestinal motility disorders.
