Biography

Robert O. Heuckeroth, M.D., Ph.D., is a Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania's Perelman School of Medicine. He is a pediatric gastroenterologist with over 20 years of experience caring for children with a wide array of complex bowel, liver, and pancreatic diseases. His clinical work is complemented by significant research focused on the molecular and cellular mechanisms that control enteric nervous system development. Through the use of molecular biology, genetics, live cell imaging, primary cell culture, epidemiology, physiology, biochemistry, and stem cell biology, his research aims to uncover the intricate processes governing both normal and abnormal development. The long-term objective is to find new strategies to prevent birth defects and repair damaged organs. Current projects include defining the genetics behind Hirschsprung disease and intestinal pseudoobstruction syndrome, identifying gene-environment interactions that lead to human birth defects, and exploring the fate control of enteric nervous system stem cells. Heuckeroth is dedicated to developing regenerative medicine approaches to treat children suffering from serious intestinal motility disorders and improving visualization methods for the enteric nervous system within the bowel wall, alongside personalized medicine approaches for therapy.
