Generate a tailored SOP for Dr. Robert Hickey. Improve your application with a focused, well-structured draft.
Robert Hickey received a B.S. in Chemistry from Widener University in 2007 and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania in 2013. At the University of Pennsylvania, he worked in the laboratory of Professor So-Jung Park, focusing on controlling the morphology and properties of colloidal aggregates composed of inorganic nanoparticles and amphiphilic diblock copolymers for biomedical applications. During the summer graduate school, he conducted research related to his Ph.D. work at Ewha Womans University in Seoul, South Korea. As a postdoctoral researcher, he worked in the labs of professors Frank Bates and Tim Lodge at the University of Minnesota, where his research focused on fundamentally understanding the self-assembly and phase behavior of ternary polymer blends, applying principles to ternary polymer electrolyte systems and exploring the intricate relationships that exist between morphology and lithium ion diffusion. As a faculty member, Robert is associated with a multitude of perspectives and cross-disciplinary collaboration in research that is highly valued. He works with graduate students in the Intercollege Graduate Degree Program in Materials Science and Engineering at Penn State. His research projects involve properties of hybrid inorganic/polymeric materials that are intimately tied to the spatial arrangement of individual components. The Hickey Lab focuses on the synthesis and characterization of nanocomposite materials with properties relevant to optical, magnetic, electronic, and catalytic technologies, utilizing a combination of inorganic materials and polymer chemistry to create hierarchical, supramolecular structures through controlled bottom-up assembly of nanocrystals and polymers.
