Robert Holzworth is a Professor Emeritus and an experimental atmospheric space physicist who investigates the influence of lightning phenomena on the upper atmosphere, ionosphere, and magnetosphere. He serves as the Director of the World Wide Lightning Location Network, which detects approximately 200 million lightning strikes globally in real time each year. His experimental programs encompass the design, fabrication, integration, and launch of high-altitude balloons, as well as payloads for NASA and the Department of Defense rockets. In September 2015, he successfully launched an electric field measurement payload into the ionosphere over Norway to study the plasma waves generated by dusty plasmas. He also developed lightning detection instrumentation that was integral to the highly successful C/NOFS satellite mission, which recently reentered the atmosphere.
