Bob Irvine holds an Honours MA in English Philosophy from the University of Aberdeen and a PhD from the University of Edinburgh. He has taught at Brunel University London before returning to his current post in 1999. Irvine's ongoing commitment is in organising teaching for the taught MSc programme 'Literature Society 1688-1900'. He is also available to advise on PhD proposals. His doctoral thesis focused on gender and genre in the novels of Walter Scott, examining Scott's creative engagement with the female-authored domestic novel of his time. His current research interests lie at the intersection of literature, particularly fiction, and political ideas, especially ‘liberal’ ideas as broadly conceived, during the late seventeenth century to the end of the nineteenth century, with a particular focus on Scottish writers from that period. Additionally, Irvine is preparing scholarly editions, which include 'Lord Isles' (1815) by Walter Scott for a new AHRC-funded Edinburgh Edition of Scott's Poetry, as well as a companion to the novels 'Member Radical' (both 1832) by John Galt for the Edinburgh University Press edition of Galt's works.
