Robert L. Jaffe is the Jane Morningstar Professor of Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and has had a distinguished career in the study of quark substructure and matter. He was born in Bath, Maine, and attended public schools in Stamford, Connecticut. He graduated summa cum laude with an AB in Physics from Princeton, where he was the valedictorian of his class in 1968. Jaffe earned his MS and PhD degrees from Stanford University in 1971 and 1972, respectively. Since joining the MIT faculty in 1974, he has made significant contributions to the field, including the development of the MIT Bag Model that describes quark confinement and has explored the role of higher twist nuclear effects in deep inelastic lepton scattering. Jaffe has also been involved in the academic community through numerous advisory roles in national laboratories and universities. He is recognized for his contributions to physics education, developing innovative courses and teaching materials at MIT, including a course on 'Physics and Energy'. Jaffe has been honored with several awards for his teaching and contributions to science policy. In addition to his teaching and research, he is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
