Biography

Dr. Robert K. Jansen is the Director of the Plant Resources Center at the University of Texas at Austin, where he is affiliated with the Department of Integrative Biology within the College of Natural Sciences. His research encompasses a comprehensive range of topics within systematics, evolution, and conservation biology. Dr. Jansen’s primary focus lies in understanding plant biodiversity and constructing phylogenetic frameworks using various DNA characters. He operates under the essential premise that to address biological questions, one must have a thorough understanding of evolutionary relationships. His work on phylogenies is crucial for identifying separately evolving lineages that are targeted for conservation efforts. Over the years, he has published more than 90 papers on these topics, and his research has been supported by funding from the National Science Foundation and the National Geographic Society. Recently, his lab has concentrated on the origin, evolution, and conservation biology of endemic plants across five archipelagos that make up Macaronesia.
